164. Communication and Counseling Preferences of People who Chose Abortion during Adolescence

To interview people who chose abortion during adolescence about their preferences regarding abortion-related counseling and care including pre-procedure pregnancy options counseling. We conducted individual semi-structured interviews with ages 18-35 years old were pregnant before age 20 abortion. recruited participants through social media, a research registry, flyers in healthcare facilities. recorded transcribed interviews. Following thematic analysis approach, two independent coders coded all transcripts using Dedoose (9.0.17), consensus approach for reconciliation. ascertained themes selected representative quotations. Participants included 17 individuals (median 32, range 20-35 old). Median at time of was 18 (range 14-19) old. The sample 58% (n=10) Caucasian 65% (n=11) heterosexual. Satisfaction largely related to effects interpersonal interactions experienced the setting, as memories procedure itself limited unproblematic. Themes, participant quotations embedded, included: 1) Endorsement generally perceived important necessary, though they did not always feel personally needed it, wanted make sure “shoved faces.” 2) Desire gentle touch. reported need gentleness due adolescence, incongruent poor bedside manner from some nurses, physicians, other staff. They expressed desire be treated sensitively by providers, just “a job that had do.” 3) Avoiding judgment. overall non-judgmental communication center normalization care.
